Got up early and was on the trail by 4:45 AM. We are now entering the Sierras and transitioning from the desert. By noon we hiked 12 miles. We hiked near the South Fork of the Kern river most of the morning. When we crossed the Kern River there were an amazing number of birds building nest under the bridge.

We climbed all day from 6500 feet to 10,500 feet and covered about 26 miles. It was fun transitioning into the Sierras. There is more water (rivers and streams) and transitioning to evergreen forest. Got to camp about 5:30 PM

There are treacherous snow and ice conditions over some high passes coming up soon. I have decided to hike down to Lonepine tomorrow with another couple and do the Sierras little later. Probably will hike in Northern California for a while.
